Ladder 1 & Tanker 1 Catch Working Fire

 December 13, 2021

Just a little before 5pm on December 4th Ladder 1 as RIT and Tanker 1 for water supply responded into Company 8’s first due for a working structure fire. Wagon 8-2 was the first to arrive to find heavy fire showing from side Alpha. Ladder 1 (w/six) arrived, established RIT on Side A, began throwing ladders, and established ventilation. Approximately ten minutes into the incident a firefighter from Company 8 suffered a medical emergency which resulted in a “firefighter down” transmission. The firefighter was quickly removed from the house, stabilized, and transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The fire is being investigated by the Bedford County Fire Marshal’s Office. Units operating: W82, E8, T8, U8, E131, T13, L1, T1, Medic 14-1, Medic 14-13, Ambulance 14, and County 16.

Training group project.
Real heat, real fire, real smoke...Those were the first words I heard when watching the attached video and they were the words that helped me realize my vision for training in Central and Southwest Virginia. The vision is to have a complementary, non-redundant training capability designed to provide specialized instruction, in order to prepare firefighters for real life situations, using scenarios & skill-based activities beyond what is taught in basic courses. I want to build a high quality training program that is realistic, and models the FDTN program in Fairland, Indiana. Since my first post about the need for a training program, I have had over 200 contacts from departments nationwide. Trainers, instructors, planners, and administrators with a passion and desire to teach real world & relevant fire courses. I will need a lot of assistance with this project. It will take an army of personnel to put this all together and it will require a lot of commitment. This training group will need people who are willing to do a lot of work initially to get the program developed and build this from the ground up. I am looking at building this program in Bedford, VA for a few reasons.
First, the Bedford Area Regional Training Center is in a central location, so we are able to offer training to many departments in the state. We have a large footprint and there is room to expand and grow. The desire to build this program is here. Now we need to work together on how to put all the pieces together and offer excellent training courses that are beneficial to today's fire ground operations. I will be sending out information in the coming weeks and letting everyone know where we stand. I will also be sending out information about the program itself and where we need help. There is a real need for this type of training and a real need for those who want to be a part of making this a success. I appreciate all the input and interest so far. I am looking forward to getting this started and seeing the vision become a reality.
I am in the final stages of booking a venue to have this first meeting.
Respectfully,
Todd Stone, Chief of Department
Bedford Fire Department

*Please check out this video, this company does some of the best work in the country! This should give you a good idea of what we are looking to build here. We want to model this type training/Training center in Virginia.
